Set the Stage for The Next Act!

New Orleans has a way of finding you when you need it most.
Star of FELLOW TRAVELERS as well as THE GREAT GATSBY on B’way, Artistic Advisory Board member @noahjrkts spent the quiet of COVID here, and even then, this city was endlessly inspiring. Now he’s helping us make New Orleans a home for the next generation of queer playwrights!
Blue Roses Project gives early career LGBTQIA+ playwrights paid time, space, and mentorship to develop new plays, right here in the city that has given so much to American art.
We’re in the final stretch of The Next Act, our annual campaign, with a goal of raising $125,000. Every gift, at any size, makes a real difference.

We’re thrilled to share that Carlos Turner is BRP’s 2026 Homegrown Playwright! Through the Homegrown Playwright program, Blue Roses Project selects a promising, talented early career queer playwright living in the New Orleans area and offers them dramaturgical support through the process of refining the initial drafts of a script. The program includes a table read of the play and assistance submitting the play for future development opportunities.

Carlos’s play SEMINARIANS chronicles the experience of being closeted while training to become a Catholic priest. We’re thrilled to be working with Carlos on this fascinating new play!

Every week, Blue Roses Project teaching artist @mattarmato leads a writing class at @projectlazarusnola here in New Orleans. Participants living with HIV/AIDS write their own short solo plays, and they get to tell their stories in their own words.

Matt and Ian Bicko, Executive Director of Project Lazarus, talk about what happens in that room. Writing becomes a form of healing, and the community grows stronger.

This work only happens because people like you keep it going. If it moves you, please give to one or both organizations. Every dollar goes further here than you’d think.

Bryan Batt (@bryan_batt) - Recently made his London debut in Here Comes J. Edgar! He’s best known as Salvatore Romano on Mad Men, with Broadway, film, and TV credits, plus three published books.

“As a writing professor, I am keenly aware that the theatre industry has a real shortage of opportunities for playwrights at the beginning of their careers. Blue Roses Project is helping to address that need. As a native New Orleanian, I’m so proud that BRP has not only chosen New Orleans as a base, but is also committed to spotlighting the bountiful talent and resources that already exist in the region. They’re reminding the theatre industry that New Orleans is a place to invest money and find exciting new work.”

Lisa D’Amour (@playwrightlisadamour) - New Orleans-born playwright whose work, including the Pulitzer finalist Detroit, has been produced on Broadway and at theaters worldwide. She’s won two OBIE Awards and the Alpert, Steinberg, and Doris Duke Artist honors.

“My career really started with me writing shows for my friends and me so that we had something to invite industry professionals to see us in. Mounting work like that has become increasingly harder for early career artists and that’s why organizations like Blue Roses Project are so important and why I’m happy to support them.”

Billy Eichner (@billyeichner) - Creator and star of Billy on the Street, the Emmy-nominated comedy game show turned TikTok phenomenon. He co-wrote, starred in, and produced Bros, and appears in the upcoming J

@dom_martello, the first recipient of BRP's Playwright's Development Retreat, has had an incredible year since their time in NOLA!
Since their residency, they've made their Broadway debut in @dogdaybway, they're currently starring in @verybluelight at @thetanknyc, and they just won @parityprods's Parity Development Award for their play FREYA. We could not be prouder to have been part of their journey.
And we're endlessly proud to be based in New Orleans. It's home to an incredible community of artists, and we love sharing this singularly inspiring city with every visiting artist we bring to town. #NewPlayDevelopment #Playwriting #TheatreMakers #DevelopingNewWork #QueerArtists #NewOrleans #SupportLocalArtists
